At the moment that we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold, that magic threshold into a library, we change their lives forever, for the better.

Library cards for first graders

From being read to, to reading one’s self: All school children in the 1st grade in Basel-Stadt receive a library card.
All school children in the first grade in Basel-Stadt receive a library card.

Since 2007, all first grade school children in Basel-Stadt receive a free library card. Although the GGG public library is free for all children, not all children have parents that take them to libraries. When they receive the library card from their teachers, the children who have little contact with books at home, also receive entrance to the world of reading.

Teachers often bring their classes to make the children feel comfortable with the library. Here they find children’s books, audio-books, films, music and games suited to their individual ages. Here they can make their own discoveries and still their feelings of curiosity.

Training this way, playfully and without pressure helps prepare the way for being able to read which is the key ability necessary for success in school and later in one’s professional life, as well as generally, to be able participate in society.

With your donation you make it possible for many children to have access to the library.
